“The Story Itself Will Never Be Wrapped Up”, says Ira Steven Behr

Ira Steven Behr, Executive Producer of The 4400, talked to Slice of SciFi recently about the show. Ira had some Ira Steven Behr, Executive Producer of amazing things to say, and some interesting revelations about the writing of the show. He talks about the publicity, the writing, and his answer on the question that is in our minds…if there is a Season 5 of The 4400 in the works. I paraphrased a little, in that the interview is an audio recording, so my apologies in advance. You can listen to the live interview, and I encourage it. Here are some of the things he had to say:

On the Writing
Generally, the network wants to know that Ira and Craig have added some input before they are comfortable in reading the scripts. Ira revealed that for some seasons, they had rotating staff members who worked on the writing. Craig Sweeny and Ira do most of the rewrites. You can read more after the jump.

Episode Name: “Tiny Machines”
Episode Number: 4.12
Air Date: September 9, 2007
Season 4 Recap

Diana and Meghan compare notes on how well they’ve been able to keep up the ruse with Tom so that he has no idea they know of his marked status. They brainstorm on how to find out more about The Marked. Diana notes there is one person who knows more than they do.

Tom and Rebecca Parrish meet outdoors in front of a large body of water. She tells him that he has to keep Maia from having the wrong vision at the wrong time. Tom notes that the water will simply be polluted. (It seems he’s not used to seeing that much water in the future.)

WWJD T- Shirts

Well, it looks like someone has read my idea for Jordan Collier T-shirts! I’m glad Cafe Press was listening and agreed that a shirt with WWJD (What Would Jordan Do) on it would be pretty neat. “The Marked” T-shirts are nice too, as well as all the other 4400 stuff.

They didn’t go too wild on the color schemes, which is good. OK, I should be getting some money from Cafe Press any day now, right ? :)

Tom Baldwin - Getting Away With Murder

The 4400
Now that Tom Baldwin is a member of The Marked, the body count is at two (Warren Trask and Drew Imroth). Diana, Meghan, and Marco seem to be the only ones that suspect Tom. Isabelle knew right away that Tom was not himself.

How long he can hide his new personality remains to be seen. Surprisingly, Kyle had even gotten some bad vibes from Tom when he and Diana came to Promise City. Kyle mentioned in his journal that his father seemed icy, perhaps even hostile.

We can’t wait to see how long Tom can keep up the ruse. Then again, maybe it won’t matter if someone else (one of the 4400) gets to him and stops him first.

Jacqueline McKenzie at Movie Premiere

Here’s a picture of Jacqueline McKenzie at the Deep Blue Sea movie premier in 1999. She portrays the character, Janice Collins in the movie. What a great look for her, and the shark tattoo is a nice touch!

Extinction Is No Problem for “The 4400″

Xerces Blue ButterflyThe Xerces Blue butterfly that Dr. Kevin Burkhoff saw at Promise City (in Ghost in the Machine) is an actual, but extinct butterfly species. Butterflies are needed for biodiversity in nature, along with other species that help to enrich human life. Just imagine if any extinct species could be brought back to life.

Jordan revealed that a promicin-positive denizen of the city created the butterfly by using his ability to manipulate DNA. What an amazing yet scary ability to have!

Jenni Baird’s Exclusive Video Commentary

The 4400's Jenni Baird portrays NTAC Director Meghan DoyleHave you ever wondered what motivates Meghan Doyle, and how she is able to work under the pressure of being the Director of NTAC ? You can watch Jenni Baird’s exclusive video interview at the main site, in which she talks about her character Meghan’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as how she feels about working on the show. I enjoyed hearing about her camaraderie with Jacqueline McKenzie (they are both from the same town, Sydney, Australia).

Meghan was recruited by a government think tank, and nominated for the job by none other than Rebecca Parrish, Director of National Intelligence (and member of The Marked). Talk about pressure!

Jenni reveals how it felt to join a show with a large established cast, and what attracted her to the role. You also get to hear Jenni’s great Aussie accent that we never get to hear on the show!

Letterman talks about son on 'Oprah'

NEW YORK (AP) -- David Letterman says the birth of his son, Harry, has made a "huge difference" in his life -- but the 3-year-old doesn't always get daddy's sense of humor.

Letterman, Winfrey

David Letterman is welcomed to "The Oprah Winfrey Show" by the host.

"Mommy has to tell him a lot that I'm just teasing," Letterman said Monday on the season premiere of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" -- an appearance that generated interest because of the two stars' much-publicized rift.

It was also a rare appearance for Letterman, host of CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman," on someone else's show. Winfrey asked whether he's "interview-phobic."

"It's just that you know, when you have your own show, you have plenty of time to talk about whatever you want to talk about anyway," Letterman said.

Letterman, 60, said he struggles between using "patience or discipline" with Harry, his son with girlfriend Regina Lasko. Harry was placed on the "naughty chair" this weekend after misbehaving, he said.

"He's still there," Letterman joked.

He talked about his love for his home in Montana and how he was honored to have a communications building dedicated in his name at Indiana's Ball State University, his alma mater. He also showed family photos.

The show was taped at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan instead of the customary Harpo Studios in Chicago to mark the start of the show's 22nd season.

Winfrey, 53, said her relationship with Letterman had warmed. She showed footage of her office in which two photos of Winfrey and Letterman are among photos of Winfrey with John Travolta, Stevie Wonder, Nelson Mandela and her boyfriend, Stedman Graham.

In the midst of their rift, which lasted more than a decade, Letterman started keeping an "Oprah Log" as a gag on his show. He would record whether Winfrey had called that day to invite him to be her guest.

Winfrey said she believed Letterman's staff would contact her staff if he wanted to appear.

"I wanted to be asked, Oprah. Don't you understand that?" Letterman said, then opened the notebook to read: " 'Day No. 20. 11/27/01. Oprah. Noprah.' It was humiliating."

Letterman frequently joked about Winfrey, and she rejected repeated offers to appear on his program. In 2003, she told Time magazine she wouldn't appear with him because she was "completely uncomfortable" as the target of Letterman's jokes.

Their reconciliation began in 2005 when Winfrey appeared on his CBS show. It was her first guest appearance with Letterman, though she twice appeared on his NBC show before he jumped networks in 1993. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend

A dozen reasons to love India

So we know a whole lot of things we want to change about her, but what are the things that make us love her? India...?

1. A full stomach, for every pocket

So the government might be intent on banning street food; but what the five-star going calls street food, is also STAPLE food for a LOT of Indians. We had a full plate of aloo-thukpa (thick, rice noodles) in Kalimpong for Rs 2. A filling plate of bhelpuri outside college cost Rs 7, jhaal mudi (spicy, puffed rice) cost Rs 10. Lemon-soda, also called banta costs Rs 5. Now in big restaurants, you get 12 pieces of button mushroom on this fancy wooden platter -- it's called Mediterranean cuisine sampling or something -- that is Rs 200-plus. Very tasty; but you'd be hungry the moment you are done with it. Oh, you are also supposed to eat the shrooms with chopsticks; perhaps to make it seem as if it's a lot to eat. Anyway. India needs everything for everybody; so while we build malls and restaurants in every colony - two in some - do we have to kill 'street food'? And yes, about Indians NOT falling ill from street food. Dudes, as a race, we have better STOCK than most and are hardier. Therefore. Not because we are fed a spoonful of dirt when we are born.

2. Ability (and allowed) to sleep anywhere

Yes, imagine, if the destitute were to be removed off the parks, the temples, the pavements, where would they go? Of course some would say it would clean up the country; but really? Or would we also become like a whole lot of other nations where you cannot step outside your house after 8 pm because someone will MUG you... and perhaps kill your for Rs 20? One loves the freedom in my country much better, thank you.

3. Taxi drivers who react to being called "bhaiya"

And give you respect. Cabs for one are one of the most common modes of public transport; and most cabbies have been very protective. It's nice. Once, when stranded near Connaught Place and a trifle scared, was offered a lift to the next auto stand by this taxi guy - this silver-haired Sardarji - who was passing by. He saw me standing and waiting for an auto and looking a bit scared; he stopped. Offered me a lift and left me near an auto stand; one having told him that taxi fare was not in budget that day. He did not take a penny from me. Happens in other countries?

4. Autorickshaw drivers who protect from eve teasers

One calls them Hero Hira Lal (remember the Naseeruddin Shah movie?) Many a times, when men on bikes or cars start following the auto or coming onto the sides and looking inside as if the girl sitting inside is blind, deaf and mute or perhaps a zoo animal... MANY a times, it has been the auto driver who has reacted. One started driving fast and we had a race with the men on bikes. Another swerved and parked his auto right before the car that was harassing and wanted to give the boys a thrashing. Ha ha. Another decided he wanted to bump the men-on-bikes OFF the road and stopped the auto, let the boys get ahead and then started chasing them. Hahaha, the dudes fled with a mad autodriver and a crazily laughing woman inside. So thank-you Auto wallahs. We have heard rape stories, but the number of auto drivers who have helped me... One owes you.

5. Bus conductors who give you their seat

Oh yes, if they see you are being bumped into by men on all sides, many a times, and not just with me, have seen Delhi bus conductors offer their seats to women passengers or old people. And we say this is an insensitive city. Shrug.

6. Churan wallahs who can barely eke a living and yet give free churan golis

Churan for those who don't know, is a mixture of digestive powders - very tasty! - often rolled into little balls or had as is. One has had a thing I have had a thing for churan since childhood. In my nana-naani's (maternal grand parents) small town, now in Chhattisgarh, this little village called Manendragarh; churan golis were called Gatagat and the churan-bhaiyya would give every kid two golis free. No matter how many we bought, it was always the ones that bhaiyya gave, saying, "aise hi bachche hain" were the ones we enjoyed most. One loves the name gatagat. :)

7. Share my seat

Love the way women in buses - strangers and when there are already two of them on a seat - will offer you a little corner to park two per cent of your left bum. But they do offer.

8. Or how, despite no advertisements, people DO help the blind cross roads.

The other day, one saw this ear-ringed dude helping an old woman, haha, she looked ZAPPED. She certainly was not expecting a bigda bachcha to help her. This generation does surprise people, no?

9. How we worship celebrities and make gods out of our actors: It's really funny. There was a time when 'movies and theatre' were more for nautch girls and nautankis. Not for respectable families. Shrug. Does that make us dumb? No. Just shows that to a large extent we are a simple people who like to believe that a Hero who is portraying good on the screen, is REALLY that. Sigh. Such wishful thinking... Almost makes us cute!

10. How you can STILL shame people

These days one does not argue with autowallahs when they ask for more than meter price or don't want to turn the meter on. One simply stands there with a sorry face and starts talking, "Bhaiiya, even I am working hard. Please don't charge so much. I know you are working hard and have to give rental. But please don't do this. I don't want to send bad wishes your way. I would like to help," and one sounds very sad. To one's extreme surprise, it WORKS! They get all grumpy and grouchy and HATE it... but mostly, they do turn the meter and take you wherever. :)

11. Sabzi mandis, local haats

Ah, looooove vegetable markets, the freshest of stuff and the vendors have all the time in the world to laugh with you. The other day, when one refused to buy kathal (jack fruit) joking with the vendors that one didn't know how to cook it, heh heh, they were ready to share recipes. Love that. Indians mostly love a good laugh.

12. How we call everyone bhaiyya, didi, uncle ji etc.

Yes, certain stats are disturbing, but even while growing up, one had bhaiyya-didis in school buses and other places who kept an eye out for me. One was ALWAYS getting into trouble with school bullies, bus bullies, playground bullies and was frequently beaten up till about 12-years-old. (Young boys are nasty, and then they grow into men!) NOT teachers, the worst they did was make me stand outside class for, er, talking too much in class. But yes, the Bullies often tried to make one cry by pinching, punching, pulling my hair. Ha ha, must have been a sight - a four-feet tall, little, round girl, standing and taking beating but REFUSING to cry. But that was only when the bhaiyya-didis were not around. Remember this didi in class 12 - was four, 9 years - Pamela or something, who REALLY gave it to this horrible boy who had stretched my right arm and was giving me 'karate chops' to see how much one could take. Man! Did that didi or did that didi TAKE his class. Hahaha, she tied him to his bag and made him run around the school playground... and made me and my friends clap. Good fun. So in a land of many abusers, THANK YOU to all bhaiyya-didis one met on the way who stood up for this little girl once. This little girl will too.

And so many more things... What's your list?

Indian middle class continues to shine

The Indian middle class is prospering with around 70 million households earning anywhere between Rs 80,000 and Rs 18 lakh per annum. These comprise 34 per cent of the slightly over 200 million middle class households.

However, the income profile shows a classical pyramid-shaped society with only 600,000 households earning above Rs 18 lakh (Rs 1.8 million) per annum, according to the Mr and Mrs India survey by brokerage firm CLSA Asia Pacific Markets.

Market researchers, however, believe the household income is massively understated -- a baggage of the era of controls and usurious taxes. Independent studies suggest that 1.6 million households earn over Rs 40 lakh (Rs 4 million), and 100,000 people own assets worth around Rs 4 crore (Rs 40 million).

Almost 91 per cent of the middle class homes own mobile phones, 72 per cent own two-wheelers, 70 per cent own homes and 19 per cent own four-wheelers, notes the CLSA study.

The survey covered 1,616 middle income households in 16 state capitals, spread equally across the four metros. The survey reveals that the Indian middle class continues to retain its conservative image but households are increasingly aspiring to a modern lifestyle and optimism is high.

According to the survey, children continue to be the main focus of Indian families, and aspirations in terms of education and career choices are running very high.

Rising prices, children's education and medical costs, however, are key concerns. The survey, done along with Mindscape, the consumer insights division of Technopak, noted Mr & Mrs India appeared more conservative, have fewer loans and own less goods.

For instance, an average family of 4.3 people live typically in a 900 sq ft apartment, 71 per cent own properties, but only 9 per cent have a mortgage, 100 per cent households have TVs and 20 per cent have credit cards. Household savings are low at 13 per cent of annual income, mainly to meet emergency needs, healthcare and education costs.

Over 84 per cent have not taken loans, and only 11 per cent have invested in equities. Land and properties account for 51 per cent of wealth with 30 per cent held in cash and deposits.

Half of the households have seen their income rise in the past 12 months, of which one-third saw income rise more than 20 per cent while 63 per cent respondents expect their income to increase in the next 12 months.
