Barry Lamar Bonds (born July 24, 1964) is a Major League Baseball player with the San Francisco Giants. He is the son of former Major League All-Star Bobby Bonds, a distant cousin of Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson, and the godson of Hall of Famer Willie Mays.[1]

Bonds holds the all-time Major League home run record, after hitting his 756th home run in a game against the Washington Nationals on August 7, 2007, surpassing Hank Aaron. He also is the all-time career leader in both walks (2540) and intentional walks (679). He holds numerous single-season records, among them the single-season Major League record for home runs (73), set in 2001. He has won a record seven MVP awards. With each new home run that he hits, Bonds effectively breaks the MLB record (his own) for career home runs.

Since 2003, Bonds has been a key figure in the BALCO scandal, though Bonds has never failed a steroid test. He is also under investigation for perjury by a federal grand jury regarding his testimony in the BALCO

Your Printer May Be Hazardous To Your Health

I've long heard rumors that the fine particulate dust used in laser printer toner cartridges may be a health risk. It certainly makes sense: Not all of that stuff can stick to the paper, and if you've ever spilled toner you know there's no way it can be good for your lungs. Now a controlled study is confirming the information, saying that 30 percent of all laser printers tested emit dangerous particles described as "causing lasting damage on the scale of inhaled cigarette smoke." These tiny particles lodge deep in the lungs and can lead to anything from lung irritation to full-on cancer.

The tests come from an Australian technology university and were conducted in a "large open-plan space," and found that printers could increase particulate matter in the air by up to 400 percent.

While I'm still trying to obtain the list of high vs. low particle emitters from the university, there appears to be a lot of variability among machines and even among different toner cartridges. New cartridges, for example, produce more particle matter than old ones. Printing graphics pages also produces more particle matter than text, since more toner is used, and obviously, air quality gets worse the more pages you spit out. I'll post the full list of printers tested here (or a link to it) as soon as I can obtain one.

The upshot is that printer emissions should potentially be regulated much the way that auto emissions are, but even in the absence of government intervention, use common sense around your printer: Limit use when possible (tell the guy that prints out every single email to cut it out), sequester printers in their own rooms and away from workers, ventilate offices appropriately, and have your own air and printer tested before it becomes a serious health problem.

UPDATE: The full study is available online now (scroll down to Table 1, at the bottom, for the list of printers tested). HP LaserJets (the vast majority of the models tested were HPs) appear among both the best and worst on the list. Check it out!

HUNTINGTON, Utah (Reuters) - Six miners were trapped in the collapse of a coal mine in central Utah on Monday and experts said initial reports of an earthquake might have been the rumbling from the mine's cave-in.

No contact had been made with the miners some 12 hours after the collapse. But the mine operator said rescue teams had come within 1,700 feet of the trapped miners and work was being done to drill from the top and horizontally.

"You have six miners who all could very well be alive," Utah Gov. Jon Hunstman told Reuters outside the Crandall Canyon Mine, 140 miles south of Salt Lake City.

"In fact, the experts tell us that they are and the rescue attempts are increasingly close to the cavern where they think they are located."

Robert Murray, president of Murray Energy, which owns the mine operator, told reporters he was certain of the location, but did not know the conditions surrounding the miners.

"They could be in a chamber that is 1,000 feet long or they could be dead," Murray said, adding that "time is of the essence."

Some 200 employees and four rescue teams were at work, he said. A helicopter was drilling from the top of the mine located in a steep, craggy canyon.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 4.0 earthquake on Monday morning at 2:48 a.m. (0848 GMT), about 16 miles northwest of Huntington and at the relatively shallow depth of five miles.

A quake of magnitude 4.0 is capable of causing moderate damage and it was initially believed the nearby mine collapsed after the seismic movement.

ANALYZING SEISMIC ACTIVITY

But the USGS National Earthquake Information Center said it was analyzing data to determine whether the shaking was produced by the collapse, which occurred around the same time.

"If you have a mine collapse, there will be a seismic component," Harley Benz of the NEIC told Reuters.

"We simply don't know at this point," he added, noting that the analysis could take up to 48 hours and perhaps longer.

Gov. Huntsman said he would meet with the miners' families at an undisclosed location. "Hope is in order at this point. Heavy doses of hope," he said.

The area in central Utah is known for its mining industry and has seen its share of tragedy. A fire at the nearby Wilberg mine killed 27 people in 1984.

"All we can do is wait and pray and let the rescuers do their job and until we hear, we will continue praying with the families of the missing miners," said Brad King, a Utah state representative from nearby Carbon County.

Concerns about mine safety in the United States resurfaced last year when 12 miners were killed in an explosion at International Coal Group's Sago mine in West Virginia.

In response, Congress passed the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act, which President George W. Bush signed into law last year.
